About fluid calligraphy
I'm Jessica Gibson, calligrapher, engraver and the person behind Fluid Calligraphy since 2006.
Calligraphy found me at an unlikely time in my life. I was studying for a PhD when I first picked up a calligraphy pen. I found it so absorbing and almost meditational, so much so that it kept me sane through some of the most demanding years of my life.
After finishing my studies and moving into work, I continued practising whenever I could, alongside attending weekly classes for a couple of years to refine my skills. By 2006, I felt ready to take the leap and make it my full-time work, launching Fluid Calligraphy.
Many people thought I was mad to walk away from a career my PhD had led me into. But both of my parents had left stable professional careers to design and sell beautiful furniture and interior accessories, and growing up watching them build something they loved gave me the confidence to do the same. Over twenty years later, I've never regretted it.
My studio is in the Surrey Hills, in my garden, and I love the quiet of working there. The focus, the rhythm of the work, the particular satisfaction of a piece coming together exactly as it should. But I love equally the contrast of packing up and heading to a brand activation in London, working in beautiful environments, being around people, and seeing that moment when a guest watches something being made just for them. That moment of genuine delight never gets old. And no two days are ever the same, which, after nearly twenty years, still feels like a privilege.
Over the past twenty years, I've worked with some of the most recognisable luxury brands in the world. Gucci, Patek Philippe, Jo Malone London, Tom Ford, Estée Lauder, Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Jimmy Choo, among many others, with events delivered at locations including Harrods and Selfridges.
I understand how these environments operate. The pace of retail, the importance of brand consistency, and the need for everything to run smoothly on the day. My role is not only to create beautifully crafted work, but to do so in a way that feels considered and professional.
Alongside event work, I take on studio commissions and personal projects for clients looking for something carefully made by hand.
I'm based about an hour from central London and travel nationally and internationally
for the right projects.
If you're planning a brand activation, product launch or bespoke commission, I'd love to hear more.
